Is it worth living in Las Vegas?

Las Vegas is famously the city of sin, but there’s more to Vegas than The Strip. In fact, Las Vegas life can actually be pretty calm and relaxing. There are tons of parks, outdoor activities and low key activities that have nothing to do with drinking, gambling at casinos or partying. Moreover, the weather and affordability of the city can make life in Vegas pretty nice. Here are some things to know about moving to Las Vegas:

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE MOVING TO LAS VEGAS

NEIGHBORHOODS: WHERE DO PEOPLE LIVE IN VEGAS?

Because Las Vegas is often characterized by Elvis impersonators, showgirls and cocktails, it’s hard to imagine where people in Vegas actually live. Most people live out in the Valley or in Henderson, or generally west of the Strip. Some of the most popular areas include:

Summerlin: one of the best areas in Vegas for kids and outdoor lovers. This neighborhood is situated right by the gorgeous Red Rock Canyon and is full of parks, coffee shops, golf courses and boutiques. Sumerlin is seen as a family friendly neighborhood due to its master planned commercial and residential spaces. Moreover, Sumerlin has an excellent public school system.

Henderson & Green Valley: Located in a more suburban area of Vegas, Henderson & Green Valley offer an excellent lifestyle for families, retirees and professionals alike. Just a 17 minute drive away, Henderson is known for its good schools, shopping malls and safe neighborhoods. Henderson is an amazing homebase for nature lovers, due to its proximity to Lake Mead and Sloan Canyon.

Downtown Las Vegas: Some may mistake Downtown Las Vegas for The Strip, and while the two have some things in common, Downtown LV is an entirely different neighborhood! DTLV is a hip and happening area full of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, historic architecture, arts district and more! Downtown Las Vegas is similar to other ‘downtown’ neighborhoods in cities around the country in that it offers an urban landscape with plenty of life and amenities!

SCHOOLS

Though Nevada is frequently ranked low when it comes to public education, Las Vegas is home to some highly regarded public and private school districts. The top school district in LV is the Clark County School District which serves over 315,000 students from K-12. Clark County includes the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson, North LV and Boulder City.

In terms of higher education, the University of Nevada has a campus in Las Vegas. Moreover, Nevada State College and The University of Phoenix- Nevada area also located in the greater LV area.

WEATHER

Las Vegas has absolutely gorgeous weather year-round. Though summers can get really hot, there are tons of fun ways to cool down. If you don’t have your own backyard pool, there are many community pools and country clubs that you can visit. Though Vegas does have a mild winter, it is nothing like the cold in the Northern parts of the U.S.A. Average temps rarely fall below 40 degrees.

FOOD

Las Vegas is a foodie’s paradise! Vegas is home to world class Michelin star restaurants, food trucks, casual dining and everything in between. The Strip is well known for its buffets, steakhouses, seafood restaurants, asian cuisine and burgers. However, you can also head off the Strip for some delicious local food and treats!

ENTERTAINMENT

The best entertainment acts in the world come to Vegas to perform, which means that you can always head to an exciting show, musical or concert. While some Vegas residents claim they NEVER go to the Strip, you can always be the exception.

NATURE

Las Vegas is a perfect compromise for those who love bustling city life, but also want to be close to nature. Nevada is a beautiful state full of natural wonders, perfect for anyone who loves climbing, kayaking, camping and enjoying the great outdoors. Be sure to visit the Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire State Park and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The area surrounding Vegas is full of beautiful red rocks, natural rock formation and stunning desert landscape.

In addition to the national parks outside of Vegas, there are also options to witness nature’s beauty right in the city. The Springs Preserve in Downtown Vegas is home to botanical gardens, animal preserves and general exhibits focusing on nature, gardening and wildlife. Moreover, Clark County’s Wetlands Park is a man made Wetland home to walking trails and birdwatching.

SKIING & SNOWSPORTS

People are often surprised to learn that Vegas is an excellent skiing destination. Though Las Vegas is a desert climate, there are mountains surrounding Vegas where you can shred. Mount Charleston and Lee Canyon offer ski resorts with sledding, tubing, snowboarding and more! If you don’t like skiing, you can also take a hike and enjoy the stunning mountain views!

AFFORDABILITY

Despite the large variety of amenities in Vegas, the city remains relatively affordable. In fact, the cost of living in Las Vegas is only 1% higher than the national average. Meanwhile, life in Vegas is a whopping 24% cheaper than other cities in the USA like New York. In terms of rent, you can get a two-bedroom apartment for less than $1400 a month whereas a one bedroom will only cost you $1,067. It’s no secret that real estate prices across the country have gotten out of hand. However, in Las Vegas, the median sale price of a single family home is only around $385,000.

JOBS

Due to the alluring appeal of Las Vegas, most jobs in the area have to do with tourism, entertainment, gaming, service and hospitality. In fact, it’s no surprise that the largest employers in Vegas are MGM Resorts and Caesars International. However, hospitality is not the only industry in Vegas. There are also plenty of jobs in education, health services and national park services.

 NO INCOME TAX

Nevada is an income tax free state which can be a huge benefit if you are moving to Las Vegas from another state.
